Hopes and fears

Here goes! It has long been a dream of mine to have the opportunity to design our own home. However, as the years go by my priorities have altered, designing interiors have taken a back seat to our sustainable living ambitions. Don’t get me wrong I have a sizeable ‘house reno’ folder on Pinterest, but I will have to be canny in how to achieve this.

Our wishlist of sustainable engeries are solar PV to generate our own electricity and hot water. In addition, we hope install triple glazing, a heat source pump, underfloor heating and a battery to store any excess engery to minimise our need to use the grid. The intention is to remove gas entirely from the property.

Why have we chosen to do this? My family feel passionate about doing our bit to protect our planet and reducing our carbon foot print in our home is our next step. Personally I want my kids to see that my husband and I put our beliefs into practice; not just talk about change, but fully embrace it. This project will come at a significant cost for us, and the fear is always that the build will run over time or over budget. However, we have to keep reminding ourselves that it will undoubtedly reduce our bills, we have been planning to do this for years, and we are in the fortunate position that the Scottish Government offers a number of grants and loans to help Scottish home owners. Let’s do this!!

Next steps:

  1. to meet with our architect to see if our dreams can become a reality

  2. contact Home Energy Scotland to see what support is available for our ambitious plans
